Pick one option from each row, add your sizes, and that is the whole specification. The sections below explain each choice.
Step 1 of 3 — Grade
Which grade?
Same oak, same sizes — the grade sets how much knot and colour variation shows on the face.

Prime
Clean, even grain and colour with only small sound pin knots. For a clear, modern look where the timber should stay quiet.

Character
Sound knots, some colour variation and the odd filled feature. The classic oak look — the grade most buyers picture when they think of oak.

Rustic
Larger knots, filled splits and strong colour change. For pieces where the grain is the point.
Not sure which grade? Choose “Not sure — advise me” on the quote form and we will recommend one. Samples of each grade are available. More about grading →
Step 2 of 3 — Construction
Full stave or finger jointed?
Both are solid oak all the way through. The difference is how the staves are put together, which changes the look and the stability.

Full stave
Each stave runs the full length in one piece, so the face reads as wide, continuous boards. Choose it where the face is on show.

Finger jointed
Shorter pieces are joined end to end with interlocking fingers, which uses the timber efficiently and makes a very stable panel with a busier face. Choose it for painted work, hidden faces and long runs.
Step 3 of 3 — Sizes
Made to your width, height and length
There is no fixed range to pick from. Write every size in millimetres and send it with the quantity.
- Width
- Across the face of the board, in millimetres. Fixed width, or random widths if you rip your own.
- Height (thickness)
- The thickness of the board, in millimetres.
- Length
- In millimetres. Boards up to 4 m in one piece; longer on request.

Questions
Questions people ask about oak boards
- Full stave or finger jointed boards?
- Full stave boards run the full length in one piece, so choose them where the face is on show. Finger jointed boards are made from shorter pieces joined end to end, which makes them very stable and suits painted work, hidden faces and long runs. Both are solid oak all the way through.
- Which grade should I pick?
- Prime for a clean, quiet face; Character for the classic oak look with sound knots; Rustic where you want the grain and the knots to be the point. If you are unsure, choose "Not sure — advise me" on the quote form and we will recommend one for the job.
- Can you cut to my list?
- Yes — that is the point. Send a list with the width, height and length of each board and how many of each, and the boards arrive cut and labelled to it.
- Is there a minimum order?
- No minimum on trade accounts. A pallet or more works best, since delivery is a fixed cost per drop, but a smaller order is fine if you are happy with the delivery charge.
- Can I get a sample first?
- Yes. Samples of the grade and finish are available for a small charge, which comes off your first order. Ask for one on the quote form.
- How long does it take?
- Standard sizes usually take two to three weeks from order to delivery; made-to-measure work typically three to five weeks from the day you approve the cutting list. If you have a fixed site date, tell us at enquiry stage and we will confirm whether it can be met before you commit.
