Pick one option from each row, add your sizes, and that is the whole specification. The sections below explain each choice.

Step 1 of 5 — Grade

Which grade?

Same oak, same sizes — the grade sets how much knot and colour variation shows on the face.

  • Prime oak table tops

    Prime

Clean, even grain and colour with only small sound pin knots. For a clear, modern look where the timber should stay quiet.

  • Character oak table tops

    Character

Sound knots, some colour variation and the odd filled feature. The classic oak look — the grade most buyers picture when they think of oak.

  • Rustic oak table tops

    Rustic

Larger knots, filled splits and strong colour change. For pieces where the grain is the point.

Not sure which grade? Choose “Not sure — advise me” on the quote form and we will recommend one. Samples of each grade are available. More about grading →

Step 2 of 5 — Edge

Live edge or straight edge?

The edge decides the whole character of the table.

  • Live edge (waney edge) oak table tops

    Live edge (waney edge)

The natural outline of the tree is kept along the long sides, cleaned and sanded — what the trade calls waney edge. No two are the same. Suits statement dining tables, bar tops and desks.

  • Straight edge oak table tops

    Straight edge

Cut square and true on all sides, with a small arris so the edge is comfortable. Suits dining tables, café tables, desks and anything made in a batch.

Step 3 of 5 — Shape

Round or rectangular?

Rectangular tops are made to a width and length; round tops to a diameter.

  • Rectangular oak table tops

    Rectangular

Made to your width and length, corners square or rounded to the radius you give us. The usual choice for dining tables, desks and restaurant tables.

  • Round oak table tops

    Round

Glued up as a panel and cut to a true circle on CNC, so the edge is clean and even. Give us the diameter instead of width and length.

Step 4 of 5 — Construction

Full stave or finger jointed?

Both are solid oak all the way through. The difference is how the staves are put together, which changes the look and the stability.

  • Full stave oak table tops

    Full stave

Each stave runs the full length in one piece, so the face reads as wide, continuous boards. Choose it where the face is on show.

  • Finger jointed oak table tops

    Finger jointed

Shorter pieces are joined end to end with interlocking fingers, which uses the timber efficiently and makes a very stable panel with a busier face. Choose it for painted work, hidden faces and long runs.

Step 5 of 5 — Sizes

Made to your width, height and length

There is no fixed range to pick from. Write every size in millimetres and send it with the quantity.

Width
Across the top, in millimetres. For a round top, give the diameter here.
Height (thickness)
The thickness of the top, in millimetres.
Length
The long side, in millimetres. Leave blank for a round top.

Tops up to 4000 × 1200 mm in one piece; round tops up to 1500 mm diameter. Ask about larger sizes.

Questions

Questions people ask about oak table tops

Live edge or straight edge?
Live edge keeps the natural outline of the tree along the long sides, so every top is different. Straight edge is cut square and true on all sides, which suits dining tables, café tables and anything made in a batch. Both are made from the same oak.
Can I have a round top?
Yes. Round tops are glued up as a panel and cut to a true circle on CNC, so the edge is clean and even. Give us the diameter instead of width and length.
Do you supply the table base?
We supply the top, drilled or with fixing blocks if you tell us the base you are using. Metal bases and oak legs from other suppliers fit as normal.
Full stave or finger jointed?
Full stave reads as wide, continuous boards and is the usual choice for a top that is on show. Finger jointed uses shorter pieces joined end to end and is very stable, with a busier face. Both are solid oak all the way through.
Can I get a sample first?
Yes. Samples of the grade and finish are available for a small charge, which comes off your first order. Ask for one on the quote form.
How long does it take?
Standard sizes usually take two to three weeks from order to delivery; made-to-measure work typically three to five weeks from the day you approve the cutting list. If you have a fixed site date, tell us at enquiry stage and we will confirm whether it can be met before you commit.
