Oak Stair Treads and Risers, L-Shaped
Tread and riser made as one L-shaped piece, for stair cladding and box steps.
L-shaped stair treads join the tread and the riser into a single piece, so each step goes on as one unit with a clean corner. This is the part used for stair cladding over concrete, steel or old timber stairs, and for box-step staircases. You give us the length of both sides of the L, the width and the thickness; we make them to that.

Pick one option from each row, add your sizes, and that is the whole specification. The sections below explain each choice.
Step 1 of 2 — Grade
Which grade?
Same oak, same sizes — the grade sets how much knot and colour variation shows on the face.

Prime
Clean, even grain and colour with only small sound pin knots. For a clear, modern look where the timber should stay quiet.

Character
Sound knots, some colour variation and the odd filled feature. The classic oak look — the grade most buyers picture when they think of oak.

Rustic
Larger knots, filled splits and strong colour change. For pieces where the grain is the point.
Not sure which grade? Choose “Not sure — advise me” on the quote form and we will recommend one. Samples of each grade are available. More about grading →
Step 2 of 2 — Sizes
Made to your width, height and the length of both sides
There is no fixed range to pick from. Write every size in millimetres and send it with the quantity.
- Width
- Side to side, in millimetres.
- Height (thickness)
- The thickness of the oak, in millimetres.
- Length — top side
- The tread, front to back, in millimetres.
- Length — front side
- The riser, top to bottom, in millimetres.
The L has two sides — give us the length of both. Measure two or three steps; they are usually the same.

Questions
Questions people ask about stair treads and risers
- What is an L-shaped stair tread?
- The tread and the riser joined into one L-shaped piece, so each step goes on as a single unit with a clean corner. They are used for box-step staircases and for cladding over concrete, steel or old timber stairs.
- What does 'length of both sides' mean?
- The L has two sides: the top side is the tread, front to back, and the front side is the riser, top to bottom. Give us both, plus the width from side to side and the thickness of the oak. How to measure L-shaped stair treads →
- Can they go over my existing stairs?
- Yes. Send the sizes and a photo of the staircase and we will confirm the thickness that suits before anything is cut.
- Do you install?
- No — we supply. Everything arrives cut to size, finished if you have asked for that, and labelled to your list, so any competent joiner, fitter or builder can fit it. For larger jobs we can put you in touch with fitters who have worked with our timber before.
- Can I get a sample first?
- Yes. Samples of the grade and finish are available for a small charge, which comes off your first order. Ask for one on the quote form.
- How long does it take?
- Standard sizes usually take two to three weeks from order to delivery; made-to-measure work typically three to five weeks from the day you approve the cutting list. If you have a fixed site date, tell us at enquiry stage and we will confirm whether it can be met before you commit.
