Pick one option from each row, add your sizes, and that is the whole specification. The sections below explain each choice.

Step 1 of 3 — Grade

Which grade?

Same oak, same sizes — the grade sets how much knot and colour variation shows on the face.

  • Prime handrails

    Prime

Clean, even grain and colour with only small sound pin knots. For a clear, modern look where the timber should stay quiet.

  • Character handrails

    Character

Sound knots, some colour variation and the odd filled feature. The classic oak look — the grade most buyers picture when they think of oak.

  • Rustic handrails

    Rustic

Larger knots, filled splits and strong colour change. For pieces where the grain is the point.

Not sure which grade? Choose “Not sure — advise me” on the quote form and we will recommend one. Samples of each grade are available. More about grading →

Step 2 of 3 — Use

For glass or for balustrades?

The groove underneath is machined to suit what the handrail sits on.

  • For glass handrails

    For glass

Grooved underneath to take a glass panel and its gasket, so the rail caps the glass with no visible fixings. Tell us the glass thickness.

  • For balustrades handrails

    For balustrades

Grooved underneath to take spindles and the fillet between them. Tell us the spindle section so the groove matches.

Step 3 of 3 — Sizes

Made to your width, height and length

There is no fixed range to pick from. Write every size in millimetres and send it with the quantity.

Width
Across the top of the rail, in millimetres.
Height (thickness)
Top to bottom of the rail section, in millimetres.
Length
Each straight run, in millimetres. Up to 4.2 m in one piece.

Questions

Questions people ask about oak handrails

For glass or for balustrades — what is the difference?
A handrail for glass is grooved underneath to take a glass panel and its gasket, so the rail caps the glass with no visible fixings. A handrail for balustrades is grooved to take spindles and the fillet between them. The outside of the rail can be the same either way.
How long can a handrail be in one piece?
Up to 4.2 m. Longer runs are supplied in sections to join on site. Tell us the length of each straight run and how many you need.
Can you match an existing handrail?
Usually, yes. Send a photo, the width and height of the section and, if you can, an offcut. We machine to match the profile so the new rail sits alongside the old one.
Do you install?
No — we supply. Everything arrives cut to size, finished if you have asked for that, and labelled to your list, so any competent joiner, fitter or builder can fit it. For larger jobs we can put you in touch with fitters who have worked with our timber before.
Can I get a sample first?
Yes. Samples of the grade and finish are available for a small charge, which comes off your first order. Ask for one on the quote form.
How long does it take?
Standard sizes usually take two to three weeks from order to delivery; made-to-measure work typically three to five weeks from the day you approve the cutting list. If you have a fixed site date, tell us at enquiry stage and we will confirm whether it can be met before you commit.
